Grizzly Base Spring Event
Grizzly Base Camp is having their second annual Spring Event (name still needed). The following details are courtesy of Mark Riffey and the rest of the Grizzly Base Camp Committee.Troops can come out and camp Fri May 14.
Callout is Saturday evening (May 15), right at dusk.
Packs are welcome to come out and help with projects, as well as do crossovers. If they would like the OA to help with their crossover, they must call Fred Flint at 892-4532 in advance – the sooner the better.
We hope to have a campfire Saturday evening (last year, the Eagle court took its place) and perhaps dutch oven desserts or some other pot luck dinner with units. We need attendance information by May 1 to establish if this is workable or not.
Projects
We would like these projects to be taken on by particular units so they can be prepared with the necessary youth, adults and tools.
1 – Fence repair along the new road.
Maybe 100-200 feet of fence repair. Mostly reinstalling posts that are there and still have all the wires attached. Post hole diggers or a rental auger (check with Midway Rental, they will provide at no cost if they have one available).
2 – Drywall in the pellet range (HIGH PRIORITY)
Most of the drywall inside the range is up and mudded. The last bit needs to be mudded and the remaining areas sanded and remudded. Once that is done and the mud is dry (probably not the same weekend), the walls can be primed and then painted. Plywood backwall protection can be installed. The plywood is already there.
3 – Plumbing repairs and a post replacement at the outside hydrant. It appears that a valve needs to be replaced. We will have more info on this soon.
4 – Campsites graded
We have at least 1 and maybe 2 excavators coming out. Some chips can be spread on these campsite pads once they are prepared. The chips are on premises, on the south end of camp mostly.
5 – Septic pump
If anyone has connections in this biz, we need to have the tank pumped. It has been about 5 yrs since we had it done.
6 – First aid hut re-roofing
The first aid hut shingles need to be stripped off and replaced with felt paper and metal. The metal is already in camp. Will need felt paper, screws, perhaps some wood tools if plywood is necessary to repair a hole. Will need cordless drills to install the metal. pry bars and the like will be needed to strip off the old shingles, which can be piled in a clearing below the first aid hut and burned – or saved for kindling.
7 – Freezer dismantling, stage 1
The front half of the freezer needs to be dismantled and the compressor taken off of the top of it. There may be freon involved, so we are checking into having someone deal with that beforehand. We also need to have the electricity disabled/checked to these motors. We will also attempt to have that resolved before the 15th as well. A sawzall (or 2), plus large screwdrivers, pry bars and such will be needed.
8 – Clean out warehouse
We intend to return this to functional area and not storage. No more “donations” will be accepted for this area unless they have a pre-determined use. We need 3 pre-hung wooden doors, 3 combination locks and 3 hasps to secure the 3 storage areas for OA stuff, cub camp stuff and pricey tools.
9 – Pipe insulation
Need to measure, buy and install pipe insulation for the pipes under the kitchen. There is a sizable crawl space so this wont be difficult.
10 – Interim gates
We need some interim gates built at the top of the road just below. Simple draw gates to reinforce that we dont want regular traffic below the warehouse or on the steep road below the first aid hut.
11 – Chapel grading and cleanup
We have some prep work that needs to be done on the chapel to prepare it for further rehab.
12 – kybos
As many as possible kybos can be hosed/swept out and checked re: safety and usability. Dangerous ones should be nailed shut for now.
