Grizzly Base Camp

Northwest Montana’s Gateway to High Adventure

Nestled in the foothills of the northern Swan Mountain Range, the Montana Council of the Boy Scouts of America offers a one-of-a-kind outdoor destination, Grizzly Base Camp. Its locale not only overlooks the grandeur of the Flathead Valley, it is also strategically positioned to give maximum access to one of North America’s premier travel destinations. Boasting over 400 acres of tall pines and fir, rugged hills, and abundant lakefront campsites, Grizzly Base Camp can accommodate most any group with a desire for outdoor experience.

Despite its many benefits, Griz Base is more than just a camp:
It is a gateway to unlimited outdoor adventure in northwest Montana. As shown on our interactive map, you can find Glacier National Park, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, Flathead and Kootenai National Forests, Flathead Lake and Hungry Horse Reservoir all within an hour’s drive. Grizzly Base Camp is within walking distance to Jewel Basin, a scenic paradise for hiking and fishing.
If that’s not enough, raft the rapids of the Flathead River’s Middle Fork, ski in Lakeside or Whitefish, rock-climb near Lake Koocanusa, or visit the Museum of the Plains Indians on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation. For anyone with a passion for the outdoors, Griz Base is the place to start an adventure in Big Sky Country.
Lodging at Grizzly Base Camp has been compared to a Scouting Bed and Breakfast, replete with hot showers and flushing toilets! You can plan day activities and return to your tents in the evening. You can use the camp as a staging point and be out in the field for several days. You can design any combination of both; our accommodations are flexible and Montana Council leaders will help build a plan to meet your needs. In addition to assisting with all planning details, the Council will also provide any important or necessary instruction. The only thing we won’t do is accompany you on the trail.

As you are preparing your trip—whether it’s a day hike into National Forest, a backpacking trek through a Wilderness Area, or a canoeing expedition along the hundreds of miles of river in northwest Montana—the knowledge our local Scouting leaders can offer your team will be critical. We can help to coordinate your itinerary with local businesses or offer insights into the best spots to suit your interests. Maximum group size is twelve (12) total, including the mandatory two-deep adult leadership policy of the B.S.A. If your group has more than twelve participants planning to hit the trail, you must travel and camp as two groups, and each must have at least two adult leaders.

You should have mastered the Scouting basics before you plan to experience Griz Base. You should be physically fit, have proper clothing and equipment, work as a team with your unit, and be willing to follow instructions. Grizzly Base is not risk-free and you will need to study and follow camp safety guidelines, taking all appropriate steps to safeguard yourself and others. You will be held responsible and accountable to your submitted itinerary. All off-camp use of private company services are at an additional cost; however, expeditions into national forest or wilderness areas have no additional fees.

Parents, guardians and participants in Grizzly Base programs are advised that one’s stay at camp can involve exposure to accident, illness, and/or injury associated with a wilderness environment. Wild animals such as bears, lions and wolves are native to this region, but usually present little danger if proper precautions are taken. Please refer to adviser materials or call the Montana Council Service Center for further information concerning risks and measures which can be taken to avoid accidents.
